“Culture shock due to Contact with Unfamilar cultures:”
culture shock is a way to discuss the psychololgical processes that takes place between two groups in their cultural backgrounds. Meeting two societies that travel from their cultural background place to another country. they rarely have a lot of time. when a person travels a lot they call him/her sojourner. when human is born they usually like to grow while having all the fun they can so that is why people travel to a different places because that is the place they dream about when they were little. some people when they travel to a different state they only go there to learn a new language and the culturel backgrounds of the country they are visiting, learning how to communicate with a groups of people. for examples when i first came to the United States i did not understand their culture so the only way that i learn how to communicates with Americas was trying to talk to them or be friendly to people. some people have a lot of reason why they travel like immigrants travel to the united states or other places for a better opportunity for their family, when my family move from my home country i was mad because i had to leave all my friends but when my parents told me that this is a free country and we can get a free education on that time i was proud of my family for bring us to the united states. people travel to places to have fun and have some advantage, after return to their home country.the culture shock talks about the interpret physical, interpersonal, institutional and these vary across culturel.
“Understanding communication and cultural competence”.
Cultural competenc y is the way which people in a given culture communicate in appropriate and effective manner. When I came to the United States I had trouble communicating with other people. It was hard to learn about another culture. It was hard to understand the context to English language and cultural bondaries. The author talks about the communiction process in which one translates his/her cultural knowledge into cultural behaviors, is from communication with others one. When human being is born they learn how to communicate and behave in the context of their culture. Where I grow up it was easy for me to understand the culture because I was familiar with the culture since I was raised in it. When I came to the United States it was difficult because I have to re-learn culture. Human being learn culture by verbal and non-verbal cues. People learn through verbal language and body language. Body language is importance to understand the culture norms to avoid inappropriateness. In a Somali house it is inapportate for women and a men to shake hands. When you communicate with your community you have to give up some of your freedom to the groups. The words have different meaning in different cultures and languages, the meaning of joke might not translate. Every language follows a structure and catagores vocabulary. To fully understand the language you have to live in that environment.
Obedience to Authority was tested by the Milgram Experiment. The subjects who were tested were teachers in the Experiment and they punished the learners who are actors when they got their answers wrong. The man in the white coat was the authority in the Experiment and encouraged the subjects not to stop punishing the learners even if they were in pain. The results showed that about 50 percent of Americans would listen to authority even when they knew they were doing something wrong to people.
In the Bystander Effect Experiment, we saw The case of Kitty Genovese who was the girl who was stabbed in front of 38 people and no one tried to help her. The reason they did not help her was because of conformity. When a person sees no one helping, they don’t help either. If it was only one person they would help the person in need. In the video we saw a women help a sick man because she was alone and there were no other bystanders.
Social perception was tested in the Asch Experiment. In the Asch experiment they tested one man to see if he would answer the same as the actors in the experiment, who were told to answer incorrectly. At first he did not follow the others and answered correctly but than when everyone responded the same answer he copied them even though he knew they were wrong.
The Stanford Prison experiment took University students to Stanford where the bottom floor was transformed to a prison and the students were paid to stay there and pretend they were guards and prisoners in a real prison. As a result they began to believe they were in a real prison and couldn’t leave. The prisoners believed that they were real prisoners and started acting their roles. Although they were also students the guards were abusive to the prisoners and degraded them.
On Tuesday it was the crazy day for me because I was late in the class and when I want their every thing was differenct the students was not staying on their normals chair and everyone move for their tables. And when my friend and I enter the class the first thing the teacher she tells us that we are late and we have to go with the immigrants students but I did not understant what was going on but we just did what the teacher says. when I saw all the boys their was not staying on their desk I told mysefe what is going on here. When I see the teacher calling the boys to the front of the class and they says their names and what they like to do in there life, after that the girls get to chose them to be their slave for the day and it like they own them.
The most important thing that I learn that day was that I never know that boys like to cook food and work in the house. and most of all I enjoy listening to the guys what they have to say about themselves and what they like to do in life because it was fun listening to them and how the girls get to tell them speak because they are the slave and they have to do what ever the girls said. there was one guy who was on the floor and the girl told him to stay there because that is her slave and she can do what ever she want to him because she own him for the day even if she what he can cook for him and clean for her to. I like the game I wish can play it again but this time I think we should make the girls slave and see how is going to work and how it feels to be slave for someone that you don’t know and them tell u what to do for them and how that hurt but the game it was fun even I come late I enjoy playing with the students their is a lot of laugh because some of the boys they was afraid to speak in front of the class and did not have any thing to say about themselve.
Unit 9 Chapter 1 and 4.
The first article is about mental illness. How people in different culture believe how to help people with mental illness. In South East Asia many people believe that the Shaman can get the spirit out of a person’s body, so that he can get well. In Western Europe many people believe in something different. They believe in psychiatry. They use medication and suggest therapy to help them get well. In West Africa many people believe in evil spirit possession. They believe the witch doctor can help a person get well. But it is important for the witch doctor to talk with the person’s family and close friends first. In Latin America many people believe in malefic influence, this means that someone has sent for someone else to be unhappy. The pai de Santo can help the mentally ill person.
When I watch the youtube videos the first video talks about the stigma of mental illness. For example the mean names people call those with mental illnesses, such as “crazy” or “looney.” The second video talks about how we need to educate ourselves, accept, and not judge people with mental illnesses. The third one was about mental illness in Bali. Some people with mental illnesses are treated like animals, and chained up.
The second article talks about how Western psychology can over look important things like the person culture. When someone has a mental illness there is not just one way, like Western psychology that should be used to help. It is important to look at mental illness cross-culturally.
