Experiment

Obedience to Authority was tested by the Milgram Experiment. The subjects who were tested were teachers in the Experiment and they punished the learners who are actors when they got their answers wrong. The man in the white coat was the authority in the Experiment and encouraged the subjects not to stop punishing the learners even if they were in pain. The results showed that about 50 percent of Americans would listen to authority even when they knew they were doing something wrong to people.

In the Bystander Effect Experiment, we saw The case of Kitty Genovese who was the girl who was stabbed in front of 38 people and no one tried to help her. The reason they did not help her was because of conformity. When a person sees no one helping, they don’t help either. If it was only one person they would help the person in need. In the video we saw a women help a sick man because she was alone and there were no other bystanders.

Social perception was tested in the Asch Experiment. In the Asch experiment they tested one man to see if he would answer the same as the actors in the experiment, who were told to answer incorrectly. At first he did not follow the others and answered correctly but than when everyone responded the same answer he copied them even though he knew they were wrong.

The Stanford Prison experiment took University students to Stanford where the bottom floor was transformed to a prison and the students were paid to stay there and pretend they were guards and prisoners in a real prison. As a result they began to believe they were in a real prison and couldn’t leave. The prisoners believed that they were real prisoners and started acting their roles. Although they were also students the guards were abusive to the prisoners and degraded them.
